President Christodoulides has announced plans for Schengen accession. All technical checks are complete. A formal date is still pending, but for anyone considering Cyprus residency or investment, this is the most significant development in a decade.
Cyprus has been an EU member since 2004, but it has remained outside the Schengen Area, meaning separate visas were required for travel to other EU states. That is about to change.
"We will join the Schengen zone in 2026."
President Nikos Christodoulides, May 2025The government has stated all technical boxes are ticked: biometric e-gates are installed at Larnaca and Paphos airports, Cyprus has been connected to the Schengen Information System (SIS) since July 2023, and an inter-ministerial Schengen Task Force was created to keep the schedule on track.
The EU Commissioner for Home Affairs confirmed in January 2026 that the unresolved division of the island will not derail Cyprus's Schengen bid. The remaining steps are the European Commission's evaluation report and a unanimous vote in the EU Council.
Schengen accession affects different groups differently. Here is the honest picture for each.
If you already hold a Cyprus permanent residency permit, your permit is not reissued or changed. It simply gains a significant new benefit.
The fast-track investment route requires a €300,000 property purchase and grants permanent residency in approximately 4 to 6 months. That threshold is in active discussion for an increase.
Those on temporary permits, digital nomad visas, or Category F temporary permits will also see meaningful changes to how Cyprus sits in the broader EU travel picture.
The current €300,000 threshold has been unchanged since the programme was reformed. An increase to €500,000 is under government discussion. No official decree has been published, but the direction is clear.
Cyprus ticks all the boxes: 15% corporate tax, 0% capital gains, 0% inheritance tax, non-dom exemption on dividends, and soon, Schengen travel. The investment case is strong now. It gets stronger after accession, and more expensive to enter.
See the investment route →Cyprus permanent residency means no renewal, no annual reviews, and no mandatory stay requirements. After Schengen accession, it also means the freedom to travel across Europe without applying for visas each time. That is a meaningful quality-of-life change.
Explore permanent residency →If you are already in Cyprus on a temporary permit, Schengen accession improves your position considerably. Your eventual PR will carry Schengen travel rights, and the visa environment around Cyprus will shift fundamentally as the country becomes a Schengen gateway.
