More UK nationals are moving to Cyprus than at any point since Brexit. A familiar legal system, English as a working language, low taxes, and direct flights from every major UK airport make it the most practical EU relocation for British citizens.
It is also the move people most often get wrong, and almost never because the rules are hard. They get it wrong because the Cyprus side and the UK side are two separate problems that have to be solved in the right order.
What changed for UK nationals after Brexit
Since January 2021, UK nationals are treated as third country nationals. You can enter Cyprus visa free and stay up to 90 days as a visitor. To live here, you need a residence permit.
If you arrived before 31 December 2020, different rules apply under the UK and EU Withdrawal Agreement and you retain your right to remain. You should confirm your position with the Civil Registry directly rather than relying on anything written online, including this page.
Which residency route applies to you
The right route depends on your passport, where your income comes from, and whether you intend to buy property.
Financially independent individuals and retirees typically use a temporary residence permit based on income from abroad. Remote workers can apply through the Digital Nomad Visa. Company directors have a route through the Business Facilitation Unit. Buyers of qualifying property can access permanent residency directly through the fast track investment route.
Each has different income requirements and very different long term implications. Picking the wrong one means starting again, and people usually discover this after they have committed money. Every route is set out side by side on the residency routes page.
Tax is the bigger decision
Most people arrive focused on the permit. The permit is the smaller question.
Cyprus non-dom status gives 0% tax on worldwide dividends and interest, 0% capital gains on shares, and a 15% corporate tax rate, available for up to 17 years once you qualify as a Cyprus tax resident. For a UK company director paying themselves in dividends, the contrast with UK rates is the entire reason the move makes financial sense.
You also do not need to be here all year. Under the 60 day rule you can qualify as a Cyprus tax resident on as few as 60 days a year, provided you meet the other conditions. For business owners who travel or families splitting their time, that removes what most people assume is the dealbreaker. The conditions are on the tax residency and non-dom page.
Moving to Cyprus does not automatically end your UK tax liability. Getting Cyprus right while leaving the UK incorrectly creates dual tax exposure that is difficult and expensive to unwind. The two sides have to be coordinated, not done one after the other and hoped about.
Before you leave the UK
The people who settle smoothly almost always arrive with a file of documents and a plan. The people who struggle planned to sort it out once they got here.
Choose your route first
Before anything else, including before you look seriously at property. Everything downstream depends on it.
Get your documents apostilled while you are still in the UK
Cyprus accepts foreign documents only with an apostille stamp. Bank statements, income proof and criminal record checks all need one. In the UK this goes through the FCDO and takes a few weeks. Without it, your residency application cannot be submitted at all, and this is the single most common reason people arrive and then wait months.
Notify HMRC of your departure
Submit a P85 to confirm your departure date. The date you give HMRC determines when your UK tax liability ends. If you receive a pension, you will also need a no tax coding notice from HMRC once Cyprus tax residency is established, otherwise you can end up paying in two countries at once while it is unwound.
Start the bank conversation early
Cyprus banks need a local address and extensive documentation, and the process takes longer than people expect. Some will work with a rental agreement or a hotel address signed before arrival. Do not assume you can walk in and open an account on day one, because your residency application depends on it.
Once you arrive
Open the bank account immediately. It is required for your residency permit application and for almost every other administrative step.
Register for your Tax Identification Code in the first week. The TIC is needed to open a bank account, sign a lease, buy property and file government paperwork. It is a gateway step and people routinely leave it until far too late.
Cover the healthcare gap. GESY, the Cyprus General Healthcare System, is only available once residency is established. A short term private policy covers the period in between, and the residency application itself requires proof of health cover. See the guide to GESY.
Why the sequence matters more than the paperwork
Every step feeds the next one.
The residency permit requires a bank account and health insurance. Tax residency requires the permit. Non-dom status requires tax residency. Do them out of order and you get delays, repeated costs, and sometimes a decision that cannot be reversed.
That is the whole difference between the people who arrive and settle and the people who spend a year unpicking things. Not knowledge of the rules. Order.
What surprises British clients most
Residency is more accessible than they assumed. Most people think it is only for the very wealthy. The routes open to UK nationals require stable income from abroad but several do not require property ownership at all.
The tax saving often exceeds the cost of moving. For directors paying themselves in dividends, the saving in the first year frequently covers the entire relocation.
They do not have to move permanently to benefit. The 60 day rule surprises almost everyone who has assumed Cyprus means giving up the UK entirely.
Common questions
Can I still move to Cyprus from the UK after Brexit?
Yes. Since January 2021 UK nationals are third country nationals, so you need a residence permit rather than free movement. Several routes are open depending on your income and circumstances.
How long can I stay in Cyprus without a permit?
You can enter visa free and stay up to 90 days as a visitor. To live here beyond that you need a residence permit.
Do I have to live in Cyprus full time to get the tax benefits?
No. Under the 60 day rule you can qualify as a Cyprus tax resident on as few as 60 days a year, provided you meet the other conditions.
Does moving to Cyprus end my UK tax liability automatically?
No. You must formally exit the UK tax system, which starts with submitting a P85 to HMRC. The Cyprus side and the UK side are separate and need coordinating, or you risk being taxed in both.
What should I do before I leave the UK?
Choose your residency route, get your documents apostilled through the FCDO, notify HMRC with a P85, and start the bank account conversation. Apostilles in particular cannot be done from Cyprus and take weeks.
