Cyprus Pink Slip Renewal: What Changes and the €6,000 Nobody Mentions

Renewal is a lighter file than your first permit. Two documents drop away entirely. But one number appears that was never part of the first application, and it does not care how big your family is.

The short answer. Renewing a Cyprus temporary residence permit drops the criminal record certificate and the medical tests, and accepts copies where the first permit demanded originals. What it adds is a balance test: the account must hold at least €6,000 at the point you apply, which is three months of income, and that figure applies regardless of the size of your family.

People plan carefully for the first permit and then treat renewal as a formality. It mostly is. The exception is that one line, and it refuses files that have been compliant all year.

The two that disappear are the two that cost the most time first time round. You do not reorder a criminal record certificate from your home country, and you do not repeat the blood tests and chest x ray. Those are explicitly first permit items.

The bank guarantee does not need arranging again either. It was issued for a duration of ten years, so at renewal you simply submit a copy of the letter you already hold.

The €6,000 rule, in plain terms

At the point you submit a renewal, the balance in the account must not be less than €6,000. The reasoning is that it represents three months of income at the base rate. The detail that catches people is the last part of the rule: it applies regardless of the size of the family.

So it does not scale. A single applicant meeting €2,000 a month and a couple with two children meeting €3,000 a month face the same €6,000 balance requirement. Larger families are not asked for more here, and smaller ones are not let off.

What it does mean is that a household running close to its monthly threshold, spending what arrives, can satisfy the income test across twelve months and still fail on the day. The money has to be sitting there, not merely to have passed through.

Plan the balance, not just the income. Build the €6,000 up well before the renewal window and leave it alone. It is the one part of this file that depends on a single moment in time rather than on a pattern over a year.

What your statements have to show

At renewal you file a detailed statement of transactions on your Cyprus account for the last twelve months. It must show foreign remittances in your name totalling at least €2,000 a month, or €24,000 a year, for one person. That rises by 20 per cent for a spouse and 15 per cent for each child.

One rule decides whether a strong looking statement actually counts. Transfers abroad or to third parties are not taken into account. If money lands each month and is moved straight out again, the figure assessed is not the figure that arrived. Over twelve months that gap compounds, and it is the most common reason a renewal that looked fine on paper does not add up.

Your statement goes in with two accompanying documents: a declaration of the number of family members you support in the Republic, and a summarised statement of income. Both are short. Both are frequently missing.

What counts as income

The range is wider than most people assume. Salary, pension, deposits held in an account abroad, rents, dividends and interest on deposits all qualify. So do some things that sound like they should not.

What does not work is a balance with no story behind it. The permit is built around demonstrable, recurring resources, which is why the twelve month statement matters more than any single figure in it.

When to start

Begin about two months out. Pull a draft statement and check the remittance total against the threshold for your household size, including anything that left again to third parties. Confirm the balance will clear €6,000 on the day and leave it untouched. Gather the certified copies of your marriage and birth certificates and the copy of the guarantee letter. Then file.

If the remittance total is short, two months is usually enough to correct the pattern before you submit. Two weeks is not.

Common questions

Do I need new medical tests to renew a Cyprus pink slip?

No. The blood tests for hepatitis B and C, HIV and syphilis, and the chest x ray for tuberculosis, are required for the first permit only. The same applies to the criminal record certificate. Neither is repeated at renewal.

How much money must be in my account to renew?

At least €6,000, which corresponds to three months of income. It applies regardless of the size of your family, so a single applicant and a family of four face the same balance requirement. It is assessed at the point you submit.

Do I need a new bank guarantee at renewal?

No. The letter of guarantee is issued for a duration of ten years, so at renewal you submit a copy of the one you already have rather than arranging a new instrument with the bank.

How far back do the bank statements go for a renewal?

Twelve months. For a first permit the statement runs from the date the account was opened instead. In both cases it must be a detailed transaction statement from a financial institution in the Republic of Cyprus showing foreign remittances in your name.

Why do transfers out reduce what counts?

The rule states that transfers abroad or to third parties are not taken into account when calculating the amount. The test is money arriving and remaining available to support you here, so remittances that are immediately forwarded elsewhere do not contribute to the total assessed.

Renewal coming up and not sure the statements add up?

A draft statement checked against your household threshold takes minutes and is far cheaper than a refused renewal.
